Scouting America S.A.F.E. Guarding Youth mark

Safeguarding Youth Training

Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) is required annually for every registered adult leader. It must be completed before working with youth and renewed every year. Training is available online at my.scouting.org and takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. This training covers recognizing abuse, responding appropriately, and understanding Scouting America’s policies for keeping youth safe.

Key Safety Policies

  • Two-Deep Leadership: Two registered adult leaders are required at all Scouting activities at all times
  • Female Leadership: A registered female adult leader must be present for any activities involving girls
  • No One-on-One Contact: Adults are prohibited from being alone with a youth member who is not their own child
  • Background Checks: All leaders must pass background screening through the Volunteer Screening Database before working with youth
  • Social Media: Leaders may not communicate with youth members directly via social media or private messages

SAFE

Leaders should use the four points of SAFE when delivering the program. SAFE Scouting measures include:

  • Supervision of youth by qualified and trustworthy adults who set the example for safety.
  • Assessment of activities for risks.
  • Fitness and Skill levels are confirmed before participation.
  • Equipment is appropriate, and Environmental conditions are monitored.

Reporting Requirements

All leaders are mandatory reporters and must immediately report:

  • Suspected child abuse to local authorities and child protective services
  • Youth Protection policy violations to the Scout Executive or the Scouts First Helpline: 1-844-SCOUTS1
  • Any incidents or safety concerns through proper Pack and council channels
